Our talented Architectural Assistant, Marcus, recently left us to spend a summer travelling and exploring the world. First up is a trip to Sri Lanka and next will be a cycling trip around Europe.
In honour of his travels, we thought we’d put together a list of must-see places for him to explore when he visits Barcelona – one of the many cities on his bucket list.

On a rainy day in the office, I imagined Marcus enjoying himself cycling around Barcelona in baking hot summer heat and thought, ‘lets make him go and hang around in a dark cemetery’. [Liam]

Caterina Market – Miralles & Tagliabue
I’ve been wanting to visit this building since it was finished so I’ll be jealous of Marcus when he beats me to it! This is a really creative and vibrant use of an old market building to create a very popular and well laid out new market. It puts Sheffield’s Moor market to shame! [Alan]

Museu Picasso
I think Marcus would love to visit the Museum. It occupies five large historical buildings [palaces] in the iconic Carrer de Montcada area. I can just imagine him sitting on those steps taking it all in. Also, as a keen photographer, I know he’d love to visit the current exhibition: Picasso, the Photographer’s Gaze. [Fera]

Les Aigues Library – Clotet and Paricio
The University of Pompeu Fabra library was designed by Lluís Clotet and Ignacio Paricio and occupies a former urban water reservoir, originally constructed in 1874 by Josep Fontserè. Clotet and Paricio’s intervention in the space is built from prefabricated elements that can be dismantled and removed without damaging the original structure. [Claire]

Brick Pavilion – Map13
I really like this pavilion; the form feels cutting edge and it creates an interesting flexible space. The craft on display is beautiful and easily raises it above many similar projects. [Paul]
