As we’ve reached the summer holiday season we thought we’d share our favourite architectural visitor attractions in the UK. We hope we inspire you to have some adventures this summer.
Rievaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire
I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the beautiful visitor centre here, recently completed by Simpson & Brown. The Abbey ruins are also stunning and interestingly situated cheek to cheek with the adjacent village. [Paul]
William Wordsworth Museum, Lake District
I visited the William Wordsworth Museum in the Lake District by Napper. As well as featuring a superb collection of his work adjacent to his home, the museum is beautifully clad in local slate, echoing the Lake District Vernacular. [Guy]
Kielder Water Art & Architecture Trail
I loved the whimsical, CNC-cut, plywood shapes which form Studio Weave’s pavilion at Kielder Water. The 26 mile lakeside sculpture trail made for a great bike ride too. [Alan]
Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire
The vast abbey ruins here are set in beautiful gardens and the significance of the site is recognised in its world heritage status. The visitor centre by Ted Cullinan Architects was hugely influential on me as an architecture student and the use of layered materials continues to influence our work. [Paul]
Windermere Steamboat Museum, Lake District
We are all eagerly anticipating the completion of the Windermere Steamboat Museum by Carmody Groarke. It’s box fresh at the moment but the copper cladding should create a distinctive weathered look in the Lake’s wet climate. [Guy]
