A bit of competition success

TestaHouseGDL

With a slightly quiet summer on our hands, Alan and I turned our hands to two different competitions this summer:

We heard late last month that we didn’t get through to the next stage of the Housing in the private rental market. We were really pleased with our submission so it’ll be very interesting to see who has got through when further details are released.

However, we had a call early last week to let us know that we’d been chosen for the final shortlist of seven in the Selfbuild on a shoestring competition. We went along to Grand Designs Live at the NEC to see the exhibition and hear the winner announced by Kevin McCloud, Charlie Luxton and Ted Stevens, and to see them present and discuss the final seven in the “Grand Theatre”. Although we didn’t win, our proposal was described as the most attractive and the most thoroughly researched and costed; I think something we can be very proud of.

The competition results have been covered on the Architects Journal website and I’ve been given the title “Sheffield-based upstart” which I kind of like! The top sixteen including the seven strong shortlist have been uploaded to the NaSBA website and other self build related websites have taken an interest as well.

On the 29th October an informal event was held at Ash Sakula’s offices in London opening the short-listed schemes for further discussion. I couldn’t make it but Andy Thomas kindly presented my scheme. A video of the presentations has been posted on vimeo.
